Stripping Knives

Stripping knives are generally used by dog groomers for one of two purposes, either to thin the fur of a show dog or to de-matt tangles in dog fur.  Additionally, stripping knives can also be used for a grooming practice known as mucking.

The proper stripping knife will be suitably dull so that the grooming tool will not slice or cut any of the dog’s coat, but will still have enough grab to properly pull stubborn fur out of the coat.

There are many stripping knives available on the market each that vary by the type of handle grip and by teeth pattern.  The most important factor in the decision to purchase a stripping knife is the type of breed that it will be used on.

Some stripping knives also have removable teeth so that you can use the same tool on every dog and simply adjust the teeth as needed.  Generally these are more expensive than other models so they are a more practical purchase for trimming show dogs versus household grooming.

Generally speaking stripping knives also come in both left and right handed models so it is important to pay attention to the handle before making a purchase.
