Dog grooming is a practice in which a dog is cleaned and hygienically cared for. Some breeds require an extensive amount of grooming, while other breeds are groomed only for show.
It is also one of the most important aspects of dog care outside of proper diet due to the fact that some breeds require considerable grooming in order to stay healthy and active. The aim of dog grooming is in fact to ensure that a dog is comfortable and healthy at all times.
For some breeds dog grooming is not an option as they do not shed, which means that their coat must be trimmed or eventually it will grow out and become straggly and bacteria ridden. Unkempt fur is also much more likely to result in a dog picking up fleas and ticks as they can burrow deep inside the fur coat and become difficult to eradicate.
Proper grooming reduces the risk of health problems such as scratches, thrush and skin ailments. It also allows an owner to get closer to their dog while also giving them an opportunity to check regularly for cuts or burns along a dog’s coat. Of course, it also improves the quality of the dog’s coat and skin, which makes it a much more presentable pet overall.
There are many different tools that are used in dog grooming that include grooming gloves, grooming sprays, brushes, combs, shampoos, trimmers, clippers, and stripping knives. Each of these items is generally made in several different sizes and shapes to meet the needs of each specific breed of dog and their associated coat.
In particular, tools such as grooming gloves, combs, and shampoos pertain to the bathing task of proper grooming and can speed up the process, as well as help make it more thorough. A grooming glove for example can be an excellent tool to maintain complete control of the pet while removing excess dead fur and debris from its coat during bath time.
There are also dog grooming sprays that can be used during or after grooming is complete to maximum the benefits of the process. Some sprays are similar to cologne and simply make a pet smell fresher, while other grooming sprays have special properties that can nourish the dog’s coat and help prevent tangling and matting in the future.
Clippers are also an important component of dog grooming that are often over looked as clipping a dog’s claws is usually an afterthought, or done to prevent injury to the owner and visitors. However, it is vital for the dog’s health to keep its claws short as long nails can make it painful for a pet to walk, or pierce through the paw if they start to curl back.
Stripping is also a popular grooming practice since it helps thin out a dog’s fur and prevents excessive shedding within the home of a dog that is prone to massive fur loss. A proper stripping knife will remove dead fur and reach into the undercoat to thin out the layers of fur so that only the bare minimum remains.
